Hillary Garver started this petition to Dr. Jerry Oates

Due to Hurricane Florence, and the time away from school, Brunswick County Board of Education and Superintendent, Dr. Jerry Oates made the decision to cancel all Brunswick County Schools Field Trips for the 2018-2019 School Year.

There was the option to add days to the school year, especially with our new end date of May 29th.  Brunswick County Board of Education CHOSE to make up only SIX days.

This is a community in which two-thirds of the population live below the poverty line. Due to economic circumstances, many of these children will not be able to have these experiences if they don’t happen during a field trip.  If we can expose students to life on the other side of our bridges, it gives them the opportunity to broaden their world view.

Field trips are not frivolous, they allow learning in a new environment.  When hands-on occasions, like field trips, are taken away, we lose the chance to show our children what their future could hold. What doors open when you work hard.

Field trips are an opportunity for children to make real life connections with what they are learning in the classroom.  We need to teach students that learning extends beyond the school's walls and is a life-long experience.

Shouldn't we let our teachers weigh in on this decision?  We trust them with our children for hours every day.  They know their curriculum.  They know if taking the time out of the classroom will be a good use of their time.

In addition, despite the cancelation across the County, there are 3 field trips that WILL take place this Spring:

1. A 4th Grade class visiting Fort Caswell

2. A 4th Grade class going to Raleigh, NC (2 days, I believe)

3. A 5th Grade class going to Washington, DC for 3 days

It has been explained that if the field trip was on the school calendar and paid for before the hurricane, that field trip could continue.

There were 5 1/2 days of school prior to the hurricane.  That is not enough time to plan and pay for a Spring field trip.

Many of these field trips occur annually.  The children look forward to them.  One day out of the classroom for a valuable learning experience is truly not lost learning time.

Please sign this petition and let your voice be heard.  I will be speaking at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 5th, at 6:30pm at Government Center Drive, Bolivia.  Please join me.

Thank you,

Hillary Garver
