Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs tweeted yesterday saying - 'I have always maintained that the green cover in Delhi will not be damaged & steps will be taken to enhance it even further.
As stated earlier, no trees will henceforth be cut in the process of redevelopment of Delhi colonies.
I chaired a meeting of all stakeholders where NBCC/CPWD have been asked to rework & redesign the plans. We will also go ahead with compensatory plan of planting 1 million trees within the next 3 months. Citizen groups will be invited to suggest locations for transplantation.'
He has further clarified that from now on, no cutting/felling. Either will be relocated/replanted using machinery/ technology or left there by tweaking and redoing the project design in the redevelopment of these colonies. Process for acquiring the platforms required initiated two days ago.
Ashish Sachdeva, Founder of Green Dream Foundation also suggested some ideas as alternatives for development without cutting trees. The same idea has been welcomed. You can learn more about his thoughts in this video.
Participative economy and governance is the way to go! Special thanks to each one of you for speaking up and sharing this concern with your friends, family and colleagues on social media as well as in person.
We are not considering this petition was 'won' yet since we need to keep a vigil for at least a couple of more weeks to ensure the promises are adhered to. We are also asking MoHUA to engage citizens for plantation, vigilance and future decisions that can impact the environment.
