Hi! Thank you, first of all, for signing our petition directed at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to show them the strength of feeling of local people in the face of the potential closure of Ely's Minor Injuries Unit. To date, you are one of 4,602 who have signed.
I dearly hope we will reach at least 5,000 signatures by the time of the next CCG public meeting at The Maltings, on 27 September, from 6.30 to 8pm, when I would like to present the petition to the CCG.
Yesterday, I met with Cllr Lis Every, of Ely City Council, and Helen Wright, another concerned local, to discuss how best to maintain momentum in our campaign to save the MIU. We agreed that we need to take this to the very top: to the Government.
Our local MPs, Steve Barclay (North Cambs) and Lucy Frazer (South Cambs) are actively involved in supporting our local MIUs and, before they can present a case to Jeremy Hunt, together with local City/District/County Councillors, they have requested key information from the CCG, concerning factors which will determine the fate of the MIUs, and are awaiting answers.
Another means of taking this to the Government is via a further petition, created by Littleport resident Carol Harley-Griffiths, which is addressed directly to Parliament ('Stop the closure of MIUs in Ely, Doddington and Wisbech'). When we reach 10,000 signatures on this second petition, the Government will respond to it. Time is of the essence, and we need to get as many signatures as possible in the coming days and weeks.
I would like to ask that you please add your name to this second petition to Parliament; if all of us who signed the Change.org petition put our names to this, too, we will be halfway to the 10,000 target. :) The link is: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/163267 Thank you!
I have also created a Community page, on Facebook, to enable us all to have a common point of reference, and to make it easier to communicate developments. Please consider 'liking' and sharing it, so that we can share information about meetings, comment, articles, and any other developments speedily. The page is: https://www.facebook.com/SaveElyMIU/ Of course, many may not be on Facebook, and so please do pass on information to friends, family and colleagues, too.
For anyone who would prefer to sign a paper copy of the petitions, copies are currently held at three locations in Ely:
*Ely City Council's offices
*Ely Weekly News' offices
*The Lighthouse Centre
Additionally, this Saturday, 3 September, Helen Wright and I will be manning a stall on the Market Place (between 8.30am and 3.30pm), in front of Dorothy Perkins, inviting people to sign the petitions on the spot. Again, please do spread the word. We plan to have a presence on the Market Square next Thursday and Saturday, too.
So, please do help us to keep up the momentum; for every one of us who has signed either petition to date, there will be many more who share our sentiment, but simply haven't added their name in support.
Thank you, again, for your support - every signature counts! :)
If you would like to offer to help in any way, please do message me via the Save Ely's Minor Injuries Unit Community page.
Thank you!!
Best wishes
Emma Watson
