Keep abusive Vet Dr. Rehki away from animals for good!
The Issue
There have recently been videos surfacing that were taken undercover at Skyway Animal Hospital in St. Catherines, Ontario where Dr. Mahavir Singh Rekhi was seen doing several horrendous acts to animals in his care.
These videos were compiled over 3 years. They display Rekhi chocking, punching and hitting animals in his care. Keep in mind these were only the instances that were caught on camera.
These undercover recordings were brought to the attention of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), the organization that regulates the practice of vererinary medicine, has given Dr. Rekhi a license suspension of 10 months on August 20, 2016. He is eligible for reduction of the 10 months down to 4 months if he takes part in "mentorship sessions". Essentially Dr. Rekhi can be handling animals again by Dec. 2016. Unacceptable!
The CVO's website states the following:
"The College protects your right to safe, competent and ethical veterinary care.
The College protects and serves the public interest through the regulation of the practice of veterinary medicine. Accordingly, veterinarians are licensed, facilities are accredited, standards and policies are developed and maintained, and an investigations and resolutions process is available."
As well as: "When you seek the services of a veterinarian, you can expect to receive safe, ethical, quality care from a qualified professional who is licensed with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario"
It does not appear that the public interest and definetly not the care for animals was taken into consideration when the outcome of this matter was determined.
Upon further research, it appears that the CVO are primarily funded by the license fees of Ontario veterinarians. There are approximately 4,500 veterinarians with annual fees of up to $1,100. Could this have impacted the results of the investigation? Absolutely! Was this a conflict of interest? Definitely!
We are asking that you put the animals and publics interest first and revoke
Dr. Mahavir Singh Rekhi's licence to practice. Allowing an individual who has physically harmed several animals to continue to practice is irresponsible as well as a contradiction to what the CVO stands for. Please lead by example.
