CMS Parents Demand School Safety

CMS Parents Demand School Safety
The Issue
October 31, 2018
To: Dr. Wilcox and CMS School Board Leaders:
How many more seats have to be empty before we act? In response to the recent shooting at Butler High School, we as parents feel a renewed urgency in addressing school safety. By signing this petition, I support CMS leadership setting up a cross functional task force comprised of members of the school administration, law enforcement, emergency response, parents and community experts. The mission of the task force is to address improving safety protocols, communications, transparency, and accountability.
* Current state review of emergency action plan (EAP) policies
* Identify best practices available; threat assessments, training, age appropriate resources, communications, and reunification plans
* Develop a strategy to accelerate implementation of CMPD Active Shooter Survival (A, B, Cs) training
* Standardize training and drill requirements for all types of emergency scenarios (all hazards approach)
* Establish a safety team network to identify school specific safety requirements and to reinforce safety plans
* Allow parents and PTAs to help promote school safety leveraging free expert resources such as the Safe and Sound School Parent Resource Toolkits and Resource Library. Examples of support include fundraising, organizing volunteers, promotion of tip reporting, safety fairs, parents night, guest speakers, and research.
* Support creation of a Safety Youth Council that can enable CMS students to participate in discussions, service projects, community partnership, and as peer role models.
Best Regards,
CMS Parents (Current & Future)
