Brenda Sotelo started this petition to President Donald J. Trump and

Thirty-five thousand elephants are poached every year for the ivory trade. The United States is the world’s second largest market for trading illegal elephant ivory. The rising demand for illegal ivory in the rapidly growing economies of China, Australia, and the United States causes the mass poaching in Africa to satisfy the demand for ivory. The Trump administration is issuing permits allowing Americans to bring elephant body parts, such as their tusks which are made of ivory, into the U.S. The ivory trade is horrifying and I am against it; we need to stop the Trump administration from allowing this to continue within the United States. We must demand president Donald Trump and Secretary of Interior, Ryan Zinke to stop elephant ivory from entering into the U.S. My solution will help end this poaching from happening to these elephants and will decrease their deaths.

For decades elephants have been targeted by ivory poachers and their numbers are dramatically dropping every year. It is estimated that 100 elephants are killed a day. Poachers use darts, poison and high-powered automatic rifles with night scopes to take elephants down and, while they are dying, the tusks are gouged out of from the living elephant's skull. The elephants die an agonizing, slow death from hemorrhage. It’s inhumane to kill an elephant for its tusks and leave them for dead.

Elephants need their tusks to survive in the wild. They use their tusks for gathering their food, defending themselves and overall they use them similarly in the way we use our hands. They also protect the sensitive trunk, which is tucked between them when the elephant charges. In times of drought, elephants dig water holes in dry riverbeds by using their tusks, feet, and trunks.

It is unnecessary to kill elephants for their ivory; ivory is not a necessity, it is not used for important resources. It is mainly used in huge amounts to produce billiard balls, piano keys, and many other items for human enjoyment. All these products are meaningless. Nothing is worth the murder of an elephant, it should be protected it instead.

People need to understand the idea that killing an elephant will not conserve the species but makes them vulnerable to extinction. “Any trophy hunting of an endangered species is by the definition unsustainable, as it cannot sufficiently contribute to the survival of the species to justify removing individuals from the population,” said Elly Pepper, a deputy director at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

I truly love these amazing elephants and we need to be their voice so we can stop these poachers from killing them. We need to act promptly on implementing the ban of importing ivory into the U.S. only then can we truly help these elephants future. By signing this petition it’ll go straight to president Trump and Zinke our secretary of interior; they have the power to end this occurring issue.
