Covid-19 is becoming a problem in meat processing plants and abattoirs, despite FSA guidance

A company called 2 Sisters, who is reported to supply approximately 1/3 of all the poultry in the UK, have had an outbreak of Coronavirus in their Anglesey factory in North-West Wales, where 158 staff have tested positive. Link to this story below.

You may recall 2 Sisters were previously investigated by the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA), who published their report on 16th November 2017, after the Guardian newspaper and ITN released undercover footage of activities in their poultry plant in West Bromwich, on the weekend of 29th September 2017. Link to the (EFRA) report below.

The footage was filmed in July 2017 and is purported to show various examples of poor food hygiene practices and

“breaches of food safety legislation, including workers altering the slaughter date of poultry thereby extending its “best before” and “use by” dates”.

“Chicken portions returned by supermarket distribution centres being repackaged by 2 Sisters and sent out again to other major retailers”.

“Workers altering records of where chickens were slaughtered, potentially hindering authorities from recalling contaminated meat during food scares”.

“Chickens slaughtered on different dates mixed on the production line” and

“Chickens dropped on the floor of the processing plant and returned to the production line”.

Other news reports suggest that Kober Ltd in West Yorkshire, who supply bacon to Asda, have approximately 150 staff who have tested positive for Coronavirus. Link to this story below.

Additionally, in Germany, at least a month ago (20th May), their government knew there were problems in their abattoirs according to the news report in the link below from the BBC. France has also had problems.

Is the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) guidance in the UK helping to prevent workers at these meat plants from Coronavirus?  The increased number of Coronavirus cases causes more anguish, pain and suffering. (I appreciate there are devolved Governments in the UK, including Food Standards).

The USA is also having major problems in its abattoirs, with outbreaks of Coronavirus.

I believe a majority of the UK public are concerned over any trade deal that includes food with the USA, due to beef from cattle implanted with growth hormones, chlorine-washed chicken, and un-labelled genetically modified (GM) foods.

The USA have a greater number of foodborne illness cases each year per head of population, compared to the UK. I estimate that it is at least 5 times greater per head of population, but some experts would argue that it is ten times greater.

Whilst we are right to have serious concerns about this possible trade deal, we also have to put our own house in order, which is a matter that the FSA should be addressing, as they were set up to address such issues.

Whilst the FSA claim there is little chance of getting Coronavirus from food, only time will tell if they are correct. Normally animals passing bacterium to humans is known as a Zoonoses such as E.coli O157 and other illnesses and it may be through faecal contamination. This contamination will basically affect any food, surface or material it gets on to.

A recent report by unchecked (see https://www.unchecked.uk/ indicated in its polling that 84% of younger Conservative voters wanted to increase or keep European Food Safety Standards and rules (Regulations).

Irrespective of your political beliefs, this is quite a high figure and I am sure it is what we would all wish to see, not only in relation to food but also in other consumer and societal protections. See Unchecked’s website above or the links detailed for more information.
