Supermarket chickens are shown to have record levels of antibiotic resistant superbugs

A report in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper by Fiona Harvey, their Environment Correspondent, again highlights the problems of antibiotic resistance. In this case, British supermarket chickens were shown to have record levels of antibiotic resistant superbugs, according to a survey carried out by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). This problem in the food industry means that drugs used to treat humans could become ineffective, due to the unnecessary use in treating farm animals. We would like to thank Fiona Harvey and the Guardian for running this story. The story can be found at the following link. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jan/15/british-supermarket-chickens-show-record-levels-of-antibiotic-resistant-superbugs Also, Michael Gove the Environment Secretary of State, has been reported as saying Britain could block a Post-Brexit trade deal with the United States, if it included the sale of chlorine-washed chickens. He also stated Britain would not waiver on animal welfare standards built up by the European Union over decades, and also expressed concern about antibiotics used in livestock. This is yet another example of excellent reporting from the Guardian. The full story by Lisa O’ Carroll, Brexit correspondent, can be found at: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/dec/20/gove-uk-would-not-compromise-with-us-on-food-standards Whist we hope Michael Gove will be good to his word, we would like to see what his thoughts are on keeping meat hygiene inspections independent. As such, if you have a twitter account, we would appreciate you tweeting @michaelgove asking him to ‘Keep meat hygiene inspections independent’. Thank you.
