Please Dont Build the Southern Regional College Campus in Craigavon City Park / Lakes.  There are Alternative Sites!

Craigavon City Park / Lakes is the most nature rich, outstandingly beautiful area in Craigavon.  It is an outstanding recreational resource available and accessible to all. It's free to use and most of us live within walking distance of it.  It is used by the local community and visitors from further afield for all manner of activities. The more energetic use it for running, walking, cycling, mountain biking etc., while others use it for less strenuous pastimes such as photography or angling. Some just come to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the site.  It is used all day, everyday and in all weathers.   It is our only available open green space.  Residents and tourists have enjoyed the Lakes for around 50 years.

Now the character and facilities at the City Park are being threatened by Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council's decision to sell 13 acres of woodland to Southern Regional College so they can build a Further Education Campus slap in the middle of our park.  Thirteen acres of densely wooded parkland is to be replaced by an 18200 m2 building and 400 parking spaces.  The development will bring over 3000 extra people to the site on a daily basis.  Traffic to the site is estimated to rise by 48%, that's 4800 extra cars using one roundabout every day on the main arterial route to Craigavon Area Hospital. Congestion and pollution will rise dramatically and we fear emergency response times will rise as a result.

We have also discovered that Council have plans to sell off a further 55 acres of the park for redevelopment. That's over 70% of the South Lake site and 25% of the whole park that will disappear for good if we don't stop them.

Thousands of trees are being felled, wildlife habitat is being destroyed and animals which are protected under law are being threatened. Otters, badgers, kingfishers, bats, butterflies, herons and many more are resident and thriving at the lakes and they could be lost forever due to the unnecessary redevelopment of the Craigavon City Park.

They are building on our Mountain Bike Trails.

The character and tranquility of the site will be destroyed.

We were not consulted on the future of our Park.

Our aim is to reverse Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council's decision to sell off our park for redevelopment.  We want City Park protected in law as an historic park so it is available for us and future generations to enjoy.  The Lakes are part of our history!  They were built as part of the concept of Craigavon and are our main landmark. We want Southern Regional College to build their campus elsewhere.  There are plenty of alternative sites.

Please help us to stop this development from happening in our park so future generations can continue to be inspired by its wildlife and wonder.   A Highway to Health, a Heart Town, a nature reserve .... It is an ABSOLUTE GEM in the middle of Craigavon and with your help it can stay that way.
