DANGER: CONSTRUCTION on Refinery MHF UNIT! 5 things YOU can do TODAY

MODIFIED HYDROFLUORIC ACID RISKGardena, CA, United States
Dec 5, 2016 — WARNING: Reuters informs us that a tower in the Modified Hydrofluoric Acid (MHF) ALKY UNIT is being replaced at the Torrance refinery. This maintenance is essential: HF causes corrosion. But with a string of accidents and fires, area residents are completely unnerved that this construction is taking place near 250,000 lb. of MHF. (Reminder: even the refinery report said release of 5,200 lbs can have a 2-mile kill zone.) WE ARE AT HIGHER RISK while this work is going on! In a History Channel video, TRAA science advisor and HF expert Dr. Ron Koopman describes a 1987 construction accident that released 65,000 lbs of HF. 5,800 people on 85 city blocks were evacuated and 1,037 people were treated at hospitals for skin, eye, and respiratory problems. Koopman said if the HF jet “had squirted out sideways [instead of straight up], it would have killed hundreds, if not thousands” http://bit.ly/2gSMHBT For our safety during the entire time of construction on the alky unit, it should stop operating. All 250,000 lb. MHF should be dumped to the MHF emergency evacuation tank (located under Crenshaw) to keep it away from construction dangers. Was the construction that caused the 11/15 fire part of this work? Only 120 feet separated the fire from tanks containing 100,000 lbs of MHF. Other MHF components may have been even closer. WHAT CAN YOU DO *TODAY* TO HELP LOWER THIS UNACCEPTABLE RISK? 1) Email Torrance Fire Department (TFD) Deputy Fire Chief David Dumais at ddumais@torranceca.gov > Ask the TFD to have the alky unit shut down and MHF evacuated during construction. > Demand accurate and interactive City of Torrance “refinery workshops” with a serious EXCHANGE of information between city and community based on scientific facts. The TFD denied the TRAA Science Advisory Panel’s request to meet. > Ask them why and request that TFD meet with the panel, now. 2) Help get the word out: “Like” & “share” the TRAA refinery construction Facebook post and view the 4-minute History Channel video clip: fb.me/BanMHF. 3) Attend the TRAA meeting TONIGHT Monday December 5, 6:00 pm: Sizzler’s, 2880 Sepulveda Blvd. Torrance 4) Learn why we NEED to BAN MHF and what you can do :. 5) View the full History Channel video "Toxic Cloud Disaster" http://bit.ly/2g5rZ0I
