It's time. AB1759- a bill to ban MHF in California- has been introduced into the Assembly and sent to 2 committees. As expected, industry lobbyists have submitted their opposition. Now YOUR voice must be heard! How can you do this quickly and immediately? 1) Call or Fax both of the following committees and tell them you support AB1759- the bill to ban MHF in California Assembly Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee 1020 N Street, Room 171 Sacramento, California 95814 916.319.3965 phone 916.319.3950 fax Assembly Natural Resources Committee 1020 N Street, Room 164 Sacramento, California 95814 916.319.2092 phone 916.319.2192 fax 2) IF YOU LIVE NEAR EXXONMOBIL Using the subject "We Support AB1759 HF-notice-of-use-substitution", 1) draft a personal message or 2) copy & modify the text below and send it to Assembly member David Hadley a sitting member of the Natural Resources Committee at https://lcmspubcontact.lc.ca.gov/PublicLCMS/ContactPopup.php?district=AD66 With the April 2, 2016 3-to-2 AQMD vote to restart production at ExxonMobil your concern is MORE IMPORTANT than ever. Channel your frustration and anger. Now is your chance to tell 14 elected Committee members why they should move forward to ban deadly MHF. ********************************************************************** "We Support AB1759 HF-notice-of-use-substitution" Dear Committee Member, In a post-Paris and post-San Bernardino world the presence of Modified Hydrofluoric Acid (MHF) in the highly populated South Bay puts over 250,000 Southern California residents at risk of injury or death. A string of serious incidents and the response of ExxonMobil in Torrance have a number of government agencies investigating this refinery and its management. In an explosion on Feb 18, 2015, an 80,000 lb piece of equipment landed a few feet from a tank of MHF. According to federal officials, surrounding communities "dodged a bullet." As a critical and time-sensitive public safety issue, we call on you to support AB1759-HF-notice-of-use-substitution to avoid unnecessary loss of life in California On March 9, 2016, representatives of 8 different industry lobbies stated their opposition to AB 1759, because it "will impact California’s economy, consumers of gasoline and diesel, and manufacturers." .We agree- there will be an impact. But if you ask officials in San Bernardino if they would have shouldered an "impact" that would have prevented the loss of 14 lives in an unforeseen terrorist attack, their answer would undoubtedly be yes. There will be a financial cost to industry. You must examine your conscious and determine whether this cost is worth the lives of up to 250,000 California residents. We know you take your committee responsibilities seriously and that you don't want to leave the continued safety of our loved ones to CHANCE. NOW is the time to remove MHF and replace it with safer and available alternatives. Time has proven that this will NOT happen unless MHF is no longer an option for California refineries. MHF needs to be banned and substituted in California and in the United States. Until then, the safety of my family is in YOUR hands. Respectfully yours,
