Dec 7, 2015 — ALERT: Meeting tonight This affects residents in Torrance, Redondo Beach, Gardena, Carson, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Wilmington, Lomita, Rolling Hills, San Pedro, and Palos Verdes Estates It’s been 31 years since the world’s worst industrial disaster in Bhopal, India killed 15,000 people after a release of 60,000 lb. of methyl isocyanate. This chemical is similar to MHF, used by the Torrance and Valero Wilmington refineries, in that both are toxic and form dense drifting clouds. We nearly had a South Bay Bhopal during the explosion at the Torrance refinery on Feb 18, 2015, when a huge chunk of equipment landed just feet from a tank containing 25,000 lb. of MHF. The refinery acknowledges as little as 5,000 lb could be deadly to all within 5 miles and that a leak actually occurred in September. Unlike the people of Bhopal, we were fortunate and have a second chance to kill MHF before it kills us.
