Don't Leave Straddie Stranded

Without a larger financial commitment from the Queensland Government all residents and businesses of Redland City will end up paying the price.
Sand mining on North Stradbroke Island is now set to end by 2019 and the real cost of this to Straddie’s economy is far greater than the $28 million provided in the Queensland Government’s economic transition package, most of which is for studies and reports.
Another $110 million is needed to make up for the loss of mining and help create new industries and jobs on the island. By contrast the Queensland Government is spending $140 million on a new stadium in Townsville following the closure of Queensland Nickel and loss of jobs.
For over 50 years, sand mining has provided Redland City with over $130 million in direct and indirect economic activity and hundreds of jobs. The economy is in need of support and the opportunity to grow.
A properly funded economic transition package would help support the economy and give it the opportunity to grow. It would also pay for the 23 infrastructure and tourism projects outlined in the Economic Transition Strategy.
Don’t let Redland City pay the price. Sign the petition to help secure satisfactory financial commitment from the Queensland Government to support the island and provide life after mining.
