💜 CAMPAIGN UPDATE 💜
Over the past few months, the Domestic Abuse Suicide Recognition Law Campaign has continued to grow, and I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported, shared and engaged with this important issue.
Since launching the campaign, we have:
💜 Engaged with Justice Minister Naomi Long
💜 Received support and engagement from AAFDA (Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse)
💜 Secured a meeting invitation from the Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime
💜 Engaged with MLAs, charities, organisations and businesses
💜 Submitted a Freedom of Information request to PSNI seeking information on domestic abuse-related suicide
💜 Continued to grow public awareness and support across Northern Ireland and beyond
The campaign continues to ask one simple but important question:
We count domestic abuse homicides. We count suicides. But how many victims fall between the two?
Research shows that victims of domestic abuse are at a significantly increased risk of suicidal thoughts, self-harm and suicide attempts. Yet there is currently no routine system in Northern Ireland for identifying or recording suicides where domestic abuse or coercive control may have been a contributing factor.
Without recognition, we cannot record.
Without recording, we cannot understand.
Without understanding, we cannot prevent.
This campaign is calling for:
✔ Recognition of domestic abuse-related suicide
✔ Better recording and data collection
✔ Greater research and understanding
✔ Learning and prevention
✔ Better support for victims, survivors and bereaved families
