Disney, Stay True to Your Classics!

Disney, Stay True to Your Classics!
The issue
Hi All,
This petition is in response to the recent trend of Disney deviating from their original animated films with their live-action remakes in terms of character traits and story. This trend is mostly an obvious attempt by directors to appear PC or racially inclusive, and it is coming at the expense of the movies' authenticity and overall quality.
Examples:
- Beauty and the Beast: An all-English cast for a French tale. People of colour and interracial relationships were portrayed in an unrealistic way for the setting (ie. 1600's provincial France).
- Aladdin: Jamming a white prince into the story as Jasmine's rival love interest. This is just ridiculous.
- Mulan: They have not only created new Indian characters to feature in this Chinese story, and deleted some of the main ones, including Li Shang and Mushu, they are allegedly also messing with the story itself by adding witches and magical powers to it. Mulan is based on a real person who really did impersonate her father in the army, so these changes are extremely disrespectful. They should be giving that movie a new title and changing Mulan's name if they want to change the story that much.
- The Little Mermaid: Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel at the alleged recommendation of Beyonce and Oprah. This is perhaps THE ABSOLUTE WORST insult to Disney fans yet.
For anyone who wishes to argue "there is no historical continuity to keep intact because the film deals in fantasy,” we disagree because disregarding one aspect of the original films means there's nothing stopping directors from disregarding any aspect they want. It's also an offence to the people who originally worked on creating the animated films. Not to mention these movies are supposed to be for children who in many cases are already used to the original versions, so introducing major changes can be confusing. Furthermore, the objective of any decent director should be to make their films as believable as possible despite the presence of fantastical elements.
If Disney wants to come up with original stories that's fine! We are all in favour of that! But give the characters new names and give the movies new titles.
~~ Disney, stop trying to cash in on your old classics if you're not going to do them justice! ~~
(The one exception I would make to this is if they created a Pocahontas remake. Disney changed many of the true details of that story, so if they wanted to make one more historically accurate, I wouldn't object to that. I'm sure many Native Americans would appreciate a more truthful account of events.)
Many thanks for your interest. Please sign and share this and my original petition:
