Problem
I’m writing on behalf of the following students of California State University, Northridge who feel unsafe during this current climate.
Many concerns have risen due to the recent graffiti in the bathrooms of Nordhoff Hall and the recently released letter addressing death threats to the students and faculty of CSUN.

We really hope that these threats are being taken seriously, as the safety of the community is very important to us. We do not know if actions will be taken upon the hateful words written, but school shootings are a prevalent issue in the United States. The NPS Center for Homeland Defense and Security counted 94 school shooting incidents in 2018, making this one of the worst years for gun violence in schools.

Us students want to make sure that serious precautions are being taken on this matter. With enough stress and anxiety students go through during finals week, this is added weight on our shoulders making it difficult for us to perform the needed tasks to succeed for the week. As much as we want to do well in our classes, our safety comes first.



Solution
I personally suggest that we should find alternatives actions for all final exams given for this upcoming week, not just on December 12th, 2018 (the day of the proclaimed shooting). Students whose exams take place on the 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th are just as susceptible to a suspected school shooting. Whether it’s an online alternative, or off-campus, some type of action needs to be taken in order to move forward with the semester while taking everyone’s safety into consideration.

Gun violence is preventable if you know the signs. We should take advantage of the fact that the signs are right in front of us.
