Update March 17, 2022: The politicians listened to you! The Honourable Joyce Murray, our new Minister of Fisheries, wisely cut the herring fishery quota in half this year. But when the herring arrived to spawn in early March it became clear that the spawn was one of the smallest and lightest in recent history. The commercial fishers only managed to catch 4,300 tons of their 7,850 ton quota.
The fish were just not here.
We are on the brink of a herring collapse that will destroy our marine ecosystem. We need a moratorium on the commercial herring fishery, and a Herring Recovery Program to protect and restore herring stocks, and to help fishermen and shore workers phase out of the industry. The future of the entire marine ecosystem depends on healthy herring stocks. Let’s ensure that herring do not become the next Atlantic cod.
Please share this petition with your network. The entire BC marine ecosystem depends on your support.
