THE FIRST HERRING FISHERMAN HAVE JUST ARRIVED AT FORDS COVE, HORNBY ISLAND
“Lambert channel is soon to become a gauntlet of herring trying to spawn on the beaches, and industrial fishing vessels scooping them up before they’ve had a chance to lay their eggs.” - Capt. Locky MacLean
And with only 56 tons of herring left - the lowest number since the 1950s - Fisheries and Oceans Canada moves forward with the same 20% kill quota they have used since 1983.
DFO’s own scientists have stated the risk of collapse is high, and the reduction of the quota is the best way to use precaution, but they have decided to listen to the industry rather than their own scientists or public outcry.
