Although Mandatory e-bike training is not widely established, it  is gaining traction due to rising incidents, with California having developed a statewide program and New York proposing training requirements for operators and certification for devices. In response to accidents, some local communities, like those in Orange County, Florida, are exploring mandatory training for students, while organizations are developing safety curricula. While not mandated, various resources such as online courses and safety guides are available to help users learn about safe e-bike operation.

Current Status of Mandatory E-Bike Training
California:Passed AB 1946, requiring the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to develop statewide e-bike safety and training programs, resulting in an 11-module online manual.
New York:A lawmaker proposed a bill that would require existing e-bike owners to complete a training course and carry proof of completion.

Orange County, Florida:Following child e-bike accidents, a petition was launched for mandatory safety training in public schools, and local organizations are working to implement safety programs.

Why Training is Becoming Necessary
Increased E-bike Use:The surge in popularity of e-bikes outpaces current regulations and community understanding of their risks.
Safety Concerns:E-bikes can reach high speeds (up to 28 mph or more), and operators, especially children, may not be aware of traffic laws, resulting in accidents.

Accident Prevention:Training can help reduce accidents by teaching proper handling, hazard identification, safe operating practices, and the importance of helmets.

Available Training Resources
California E-Bike Safety & Training:
The CHP developed an 11-module online manual for e-bike users.

Is piloting a new safety curriculum for middle schools in Orange County to educate students on safe e-bike use.

Online Resources:
Organizations like The American College of Surgeons (ACS) provide general safety information for e-bike riders.

What Training Typically Covers
Pre-Ride Safety Checks: How to inspect the battery, brakes, tires, and helmet.

E-Bike Controls: Understanding different power modes and pedal-assist levels.

Traffic Laws and Road Safety: How to obey traffic signals, yield, signal turns, and ride predictably.
