It kept the crown jewel: access to over 35 million users for its hyper-profitable services division (like the App Store and iCloud), which boasts a profit margin of nearly 74%. Every smuggled iPhone becomes a ticket to passive income for Apple at zero customer acquisition cost.  

The company obsessed with control has consciously decided to turn a blind eye to where its screens are lighting up.
