Protect Belmont Koala Forest

The issue

There is a proposal by the Queensland State Government to clear 5.4 ha of the Belmont Koala Forest for expansion of sporting facilities, a non-essential use.

This parcel of land is the vital northern section of the Koala Coast Corridor. It is home to koalas, gliders, wallabies, echidnas and other native wildlife. It is essential koala habitat on public land. This proposal contradicts the government's stated commitments to protect koala habitat.

There should be no further clearing of this bushland.

The largely forested section of the land, that is not in use for sporting activities, should have a proper protection plan and be declared a Nature Refuge under the Nature Conservation Act.
