Unlike the rest of the UK, fox hunting with dogs is still legal in Northern Ireland.
It's now seven years since the Green Party tried to change the law to give foxes in Northern Ireland the same legal protection they have in the rest of the UK. The other parties blocked any change, and foxes are still routinely torn apart by dogs in the name of "sport".
Green Party leader Steven Agnew MLA has renewed his call to ban hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland.
Mr Agnew said: “Northern Ireland has been left as the only part of the UK without a ban on this cruel and disgusting practice, thanks to the lack of support our party received from the other parties in the Assembly.
“The result is that not only has Northern Ireland become the last haven in the UK for foxhunting, but people are actually travelling here to take part in bloodsport. There is no evidence whatsoever that hunting is an effective method of pest control and this bloody tourism is by no means the kind of reputation Northern Ireland needs or wants.
“Since the ban in England, public opinion has substantially shifted against this cruel practice. The most recent annual Ipsos Mori poll on hunting shows an all-time high in support for the ban, with 84% of people opposed to a return to foxhunting with dogs, while the ban on deer hunting is supported by 88% and the ban on hare coursing is supported by 91% of people.
“In Northern Ireland, an Ipsos Mori poll in 2015 showed that fewer than 1 in 20 supported deer hunting remaining legal, fewer than 1 in 8 supported hare hunting remaining legal and fewer than 1 in 5 supported foxhunting remaining legal.
“Our barbaric laws are hugely out of step with public opinion and we are repeatedly hearing from farmers who have had their land trashed and livestock ripped apart by these bloodthirsty countryside vandals. As these people prepare for the Christmas hunt, I am calling on DAERA to look again at this issue as a matter of urgency.”
