VA: Accept Offer to Preserve Old-Growth Forest in Indianapolis

An old-growth forest in inner city Indianapolis faces an imminent threat. The National Cemetery Administration (NCA) plans to clear a 14.75-acre parcel of these woods for a veterans columbaria starting in February 2017. Forest biologists have concluded that the site is "of nature preserve quality...all efforts should be made to conserve this example of Indiana's natural heritage."
Destroying our country's natural heritage is no way to honor our veterans! Fortunately, The Dr. Laura Hare Charitable Trust has offered to purchase these woods back from the VA so this forest can be protected in perpetuity as either a park or a nature preserve for the enjoyment of the Indianapolis community.
The VA now has the opportunity to correct course from its disregard for the ecological value of the forest, its refusal to explore alternatives, and its ironic planned destruction of our natural heritage for which many veterans have fought.
Review this case statement for more details, and join us in telling United States Secretary of Veteran Affairs Dr. David J. Shulkin to stop this senseless destruction by accepting the Dr. Laura Hare Charitable Trust's offer to purchase these woods.
Please consider making a donation to Indiana Forest Alliance as they continue to advance the coalition's efforts to save this forest.
