Take Action: Saving the Philippines' Marine & Coastal Environment
The Issue
The Philippines has been labeled as one of the countries with the most beautiful islands, especially in marine and coastal areas. Marine and coastal environments greatly affect the lives of the country’s people because these islands are part of who they are. The country’s islands are one of the assets that Filipinos are very proud of, thus, it’s something that the people of the Philippines should take care of.
One of the main livelihoods of the country’s people is fishing. But, because of the people’s lack of discipline with regards to disposing of waste, almost all of the waste goes straight to the ocean, affecting the lives of marine animals. With the increased amount of dead and dying fishes in the seas and oceans, the country’s fishermen are having a hard time collecting food. In supporting this campaign on Marine and Coastal Protection, you will help us in achieving a healthy, and beautiful future for our environment.
We did some research about the cases of the marine and coastal biodiversity in the Philippines, and we discovered that the country’s oceans and coasts are highly threatened. These are some of the major threats to marine and coastal ecosystem: Land-based pollution, eutrophication, over fishing, destructive fishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, alterations of physical habitats, invasions of exotic species, and global climate change.
We can help the country’s government lessen the amount of pollution-related threats in the seas, oceans, and coasts by suggesting projects. The Department of Natural Resources can implement projects such as regular coastal cleanup and educating people of proper trash segregation. Filipinos need to be educated regarding the consequences of the destruction of our marine and coastal environments, especially to the younger generation. By educating the younger generation, we can have an effect on improving our marine and coastal biodiversity for the better. Simply knowing the consequences is not enough, we should also be able to put our knowledge into action.
As Rappler stated, "Every Filipino has a role: Taking care of our oceans and seas."
