Stop Escort Ireland's platform for punters to rate and review sex with women they rent.

This petition calls for the Department of Justice to introduce legislation which would prohibit the sex trade/escort website 'Escort Ireland' from hosting and promoting the rating and reviewing of women advertised on it.

On the Escort Ireland website, men can log in to find a woman they want to rent for sex. Following the appointment they then leave a 'review', in which they rate various aspects of the experience out of 5 stars. They can also describe the encounter in as graphic detail as they want, and whether the sex was to their satisfaction and 'value for money'.

In my opinion, purchasing sex already contradicts true sexual consent, and it is clear in some of these reviews, that the men are aware that the woman was not 'into' the sex, or was 'unwilling' or 'unenthusiastic' not to mention 'unresponsive'. In current discourse around sexual consent, we talk about how sexual consent must be enthusiastic and ongoing. The men who leave reviews are not interested in whether the woman is enthusiastic or not. It is illegal in the entire Island of Ireland to purchase sex, so this platform which enables and encourages and promotes illegal behavior should be abolished.

My heart and my mind hurt writing this and I wonder how we have to even ask people to sign this petition for the Government to address it.

On 'Escort Ireland' men rate a woman's 'physical apearance', 'location', 'satisfacation', 'accuracy of photos', 'overall experience', and most disturbingly, 'value for money'. They can also comment on whether they would 'repeat' or 'recommend'.

Please take a look at how these men speak about sex with these women, please look at how they use money to bypass healthy sexual consent regardless of how unwilling the woman is, for their own orgasm. Even in the case of 'positive' reviews, the situation remains the same – punters' entitlement to rate and judge women's bodies, to disregard her own sexuality, to own her completely for the hour he paid for.

Although women have the option to 'opt out' of reviews, this deems them untrustworthy in the eyes of 'punters', who go on to review them anyway in the 'community section'.

The Oxford dictionary defines a 'pimp' as 'a man who controls prostitutes and arranges clients for them, taking a percentage of their earnings in return'. The site charges the women or their pimps to advertise on it, therefore Escort Ireland is the biggest pimp in Ireland.

Escort Ireland is not alone. Every country has one if not more escort review sites, like Punternet in the UK. A brief search I carried out of their reviews, showed many indicating abuse of every description, evidence of trafficking and pimping aswell as underage girls being sold for sex. In my opinion Escort Ireland is no different when it comes to aiding the exploitation and abuse of potentially extremely vulnerable and trafficked women.

The following are just a few examples of the more frightening reviews I read on Punter Net and Escort Ireland sites, highlighting how paying for sex overrides any consideration for the woman's consent and welfare. The fact these men see this as a bad service rather than unwanted sex is clear in their 'reviews'. This is terrifying.

‘...She was largely unresponsive...’                                                                      'There was no life in her.'                                                                                      ‘Her body was that of a young teenage girl...’
‘How beautiful and babylike they were’ (speaking of an escort’s breasts).
‘Her cervix as tight as a babys asshole.’
 ‘She was disinterested'.
‘She was just looking at the  ceiling in disgust'.
'A bit uncommunicative, typical but not a problem'.

As a woman, and as a feminist, I do not want to live in a world where women's sexuality can be bought and rated by men, and where their lack of enthusiastic and ongoing consent is given a one star rating.

This is peak patriarchy. This is the antithesis of equality, and the antithesis of liberation.
