Call for a total ban on wood stoves & smoke pollution in residential areas.

Call for a total ban on wood stoves & smoke pollution in residential areas.

The Issue

Wood stoves produce more toxic PM2.5 pollution than 1000 petrol cars. These tiny particles are inhaled and enter the bloodstream. They can cause cancer, trigger heart attacks, strokes, asthma and miscarriages. Children can have their lung development permanently stunted. Wood smoke is highly carcinogenic - it contains Benzo-a-pyrene a potent carcinogen. There are no safe limits to woodsmoke exposure. In residential areas woodsmoke can make up 50% of the ambient air pollution. Annually 50 000 people are dying as a direct result of breathing polluted air. There is no reason to burn wood when there are cleaner, safer & cheaper options available. We call on Chris Wormald to protect the public by banning fires and stoves in residential areas .http://www.bmj.com/content/350/bmj.h2757/rr-1
