Compulsory Self-Care Classes in Schools

The Issue

Every child deserves to be taught how to look after themselves. Educating them in self-care can provide them with the skills and knowledge to combat the negative pressures brought about by a modern society seemingly obsessed with appearance. These pressures are amplified by social media where young people struggle to find role models they can relate to because of Photoshopped selfies, airbrushing, and retouched images. There is a lack of education about our physical and mental health. Online trolls, bullying, body image, and self-esteem issues can stifle young people's ambitions and I hope with the proper education we can enable our future generations to reach their full potential.

  • 1.5 million young people are bullied and more than 725,000 people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder. Devastatingly 20% of anorexia sufferers will die prematurely from their illness.
  • Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online and 68% of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem.

Iskra LawrencePetition StarterI am Iskra Lawrence a British model represented by JAG models in the Americas and Models1 in Europe. I believe #EveryBODYisbeautiful! I’m a champion of body diversity, and have long been committed to improving the image of women in the media, having been told that I was both “too big” for straight-size modeling and “not big enough” for plus-modeling. As Aerie’s #AerieReal Role Model I have been honoured to be included in unretouched intimates, loungewear and swim campaigns and tour universities across the USA to speak with students about body positivism. I am also a brand ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association, creating the NEDA Inspires Award and working to generate awareness and support for individuals and families affected by eating disorders. I am a guest author to many publications including Time and the Huffington Post, and the managing editor of RunwayRiot, a fashion, style and beauty site for women of all sizes.
