Petition for universities to do more to help students suffering with loneliness.
The Issue
Every year thousands of young people move away from home to start their new lives at their chosen university. For many, this is the first time they have lived away from home, away from their friends and family who they have seen practically every day for as long as they can remember. For some, it can be difficult to adjust to life away from home, moving into student halls with people you have never met before, starting classes with all new faces.
These things can often be quite daunting for many young people, with the pressure to make friends and fit in. Over the past 5 years, the number of university students seeking counselling has risen by 50%, with more and more students struggling to cope with the pressures that university life brings. While it is good to see so many more students speaking out about their mental health problems, there are still many who feel they have no one to talk to.
Our campaign looks to raise awareness for those students who are struggling to cope with loneliness at university. It is not always easy to make friends and sometimes even less easy to admit to feeling lonely. We believe more can be done by universities across the country to help students make friends and feel like more of a part of the community. Whether it be more social events and activities where students can meet others who might be struggling with making friends and meeting people or specialised counselling sessions.
