A compulsory mental health pupil leadership team in schools

A shocking 1 in 4 people suffer from a mental illness in Northern Ireland and we have the highest rates of suicide in the UK. At my school, we have a pastoral care prefect who supports our large pastoral care team to ensure every student's mental health is cared for. I am proposing for a compulsory mental health pupil leadership team for every school in Northern Ireland, Primary and Secondary. This will allow the school to hold weekly meetings, suggest and make amendments to the pastoral care system, allow students to speak to another student, rather than a teacher, if they feel more comfortable with this and raise awareness about mental health! I have personally suffered from panic attacks, bouts of depression and suicial thoughts, things need to change! Will this cost money? Not necessarily! Will this change lives? Absolutely! Is it worth it? 100%! Students, parents, teachers, campaigners, politicians, everyone, listen up!! We need to make a change and we need to do it now! Young people know much more than we give them credit for and their voices need to be heard too!!!
