Petition updateA Circle Train Line around the Belfast Commuter Belt2026 Is a Make-or-Break Year for Rail in Northern Ireland
Circle LineUnited Kingdom
Jan 2, 2026

As we move into 2026, the Belfast Circle Line Campaign is focused on turning rail plans into real projects that benefit communities right across Northern Ireland.

Translink’s proposals include restoring rail to Armagh, delivering the Portadown-Derry route, reopening the Knockmore Line between Antrim and Lisburn - the foundation of a future Belfast Circle Line - and improving rail access to Belfast International Airport and Belfast City Airport. Together, these schemes would reconnect towns, strengthen regional economies, and provide real alternatives to car journeys.

This is a genuine opportunity to rebalance transport investment - but it will only happen if the Northern Ireland Assembly provides full financial and political backing.

Subject: Support rail expansion across Northern Ireland

Dear [MLA name],

I am writing to ask that you support full financial backing for Translink’s railway expansion plans, including restoring rail services to Armagh, delivering the Portadown-Derry route, reopening the Knockmore Line between Antrim and Lisburn as the foundation of a future Belfast Circle Line, and improving rail access to Belfast International and Belfast City airports.

These projects are essential for regional balance, economic growth, climate targets and better connectivity across Northern Ireland.

Kind regards,
[Your name]

2026 can be the year Northern Ireland finally moves forward on rail - regionally and strategically.
