Open Primaries
Dec 5, 2016
A lot has changed in our political landscape in recent months, and one thing is clear: Both parties are going to have to reshuffle their leadership and their organizing strategy following this election.
We are a turning point in our politics. The DNC and the RNC will both select new chairs next month. You might be asking why this matters, but it does for one very important reason: The chairs of the DNC and RNC have the power to decide who gets to vote in the primary in 2020.
We want to make sure that the incoming chairs understand that 70% of the American people favor a system open to all voters. We want them to conduct a 50-state open presidential primary in 2020. That is exactly why we're conducting a new petition calling on the incoming chairs to open the primaries.
Outcome of this election aside, there was a consensus amongst American voters -- from all ends of the political spectrum -- that the electoral process was deeply flawed and unfair. Over 26 million registered voters were locked out of the 2016 presidential primaries. That figure is even more alarming when contrasted to the number of Americans who voted for Trump or Clinton in the primaries -- just 29 million.
The parties know that they’re in trouble. Independents now constitute 43% (a plurality) of the electorate; over half of Millennials are registered as independent. If “did not vote” had been a presidential candidate in this election, it would have won by a landslide.
It’s time that our politics stop being controlled by hyper-partisan party loyalists, special interests, and establishment talking heads. Opening the primaries would allow for a much more diverse range of candidates, discussions, and policies; it would give voters back control over our politics.
Please, sign our new petition and share it with family and friends.
