Dear <Recipient Name>,
I am writing to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency regarding the recent tragedy involving the death of freshman student Akul Dhawan at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). As a parent, I cannot fathom the pain and anguish that Akul's family must be enduring, especially considering the circumstances surrounding his search and subsequent tragic passing.

Last Friday, a remembrance event for Akul was held on the UIUC campus, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating loss that our community has experienced. However, amidst the grieving process, there remain pressing questions regarding the University's response, particularly that of the UIUC police department, to Akul's search procedures.

It is deeply troubling to learn that despite being reported missing by a friend, the UIUC police failed to conduct a thorough search for Akul, ultimately resulting in his tragic death due to hyperthermia. Even more concerning is the fact that Akul's body was found a mere 300 feet from the location where he was reported missing, by a good Samaritan, a staggering 10 hours after he was initially reported missing. How could the University's own law enforcement agency fail to locate a student who was so close to where he was last seen?

The lack of action and apparent negligence on the part of the UIUC police department is not only unacceptable but raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of all students on campus. As members of the UIUC community, we entrust our safety and security to the University and its affiliated law enforcement agencies, and this tragic incident has shattered that trust.

Furthermore, the ongoing police investigation being conducted by the University police themselves only exacerbates our concerns. It is imperative that there be a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akul's death. We demand accountability and justice for Akul, his family, and the entire UIUC community.

Chancellor Jones, it is crucial that swift and decisive action be taken to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again on our campus. No parent should ever have to endure the heartbreak of losing a child due to the negligence of those entrusted with their safety. We urge you to prioritize the safety and well-being of all UIUC students and to take immediate steps to address the failures that led to this devastating loss.

We expect nothing less than a comprehensive and independent review of the University's police response and search procedures, as well as meaningful reforms to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Our community deserves nothing less than the highest standards of safety and accountability.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We eagerly await your prompt and decisive action in ensuring justice for Akul and the entire UIUC community.
Regards,
