The Issue

Parliament should be held outside until all school roofs impacted by hurricane Melissa are fixed.

Schools are meant to be a sanctuary for learning, friendship, and the growth for the young students. It pains me to see that some of these very institutions, now without roofs, are leaving children vulnerable to the elements. In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, countless classrooms have been left roofless, exposing children to extreme weather conditions like scorching heat and imminent rains. Our children deserve a safe environment conducive to learning, not one where they must endure the heat or risk catching colds from seasonal downpours.

Recently, during a public conference, the Prime Minister mentioned that learning outside might be an enjoyable experience, an assertion that downplays the severity of the current situation. The reality is that our children are at risk of sunburn, dehydration, or more severe health issues due to extended periods in the sun. Furthermore, outdoor learning is impractical during inclement weather, which is a frequent occurrence, especially post-hurricane.

Factually, statistics emphasize that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can severely impair cognitive function, hindering a child's ability to learn effectively. This situation isn't just a temporary inconvenience; it has long-lasting repercussions on our children's education and their future.

Our demand is simple and actionable: the government must prioritize and expedite the reconstruction of damaged school roofs. We propose that Parliament sessions be held outside in solidarity with these children until tangible steps are taken to restore these essential infrastructures. By doing so, the government will demonstrate its commitment to our community and, most importantly, to the well-being and future of our children.

We are counting on the community's support to make this happen. Please sign this petition to urge our government to act swiftly in restoring our schools and making them a safe learning environment once more.
