demand transparency and accountability from Bayside HS and Brevard School Board
The Issue
In a shocking and deeply personal experience, my daughter was subjected to bullying by a teacher at Bayside High School. To our horror, this bullying incident escalated to a point where her hair was set on fire, leading to trauma and harm. Despite having documented safety concerns, which were shared with school officials beforehand, these critical issues were met with dismissal when the principal ignored my email. Instead of receiving protection, my daughter faced further victimization, resulting in her being suspended.
This is not an isolated incident but rather a symptom of a larger systemic problem within the school board's processes. The alarming reality is that the voices of concerned parents and guardians are restricted, allowing only three minutes to address these serious and potentially life-threatening concerns during board meetings. The prioritization of promotional efforts over the hard truths concerning student safety and critical issues is unacceptable and demonstrates a lack of transparency and accountability.
Statistics show that bullying is a prevalent issue in schools across the country. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that, in the United States, about 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying in 2019. Our school board must recognize the weight of these numbers and take action to protect students.
We are calling on the school board to implement changes that will grant more time for parents and guardians to voice urgent safety concerns during meetings. Parents and students should never feel that their voices are minimized or ignored when their safety is at stake. By allowing more comprehensive dialogues, school officials can be better equipped to handle these pressing issues promptly and with due diligence.
Join us in demanding change to ensure our children are not just part of numbers and statistics but are prioritized and protected within their learning environments. Sign this petition to hold the school board accountable and ensure student safety is at the forefront of their agenda.
