I am a passionate believer in freedom of expression and creativity, especially in India, my home country, which stands proud as the world's largest democracy. My concern rises from the ongoing obstacles being created to prevent the release of the film "Emergency" by Kangana Ranaut. This movie, depicting events surrounding the emergency and perhaps ending with assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, has come under scrutiny from certain communities who claim it is a misrepresentation. Yet, the historical events portrayed in the film are based on documented sources.

It is an indisputable fact that Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984, which led to devastating anti-Sikh riots (source: Encyclopedia Britannica). The film merely seeks to bring this historical event to life. Muffling the movie on the grounds of misrepresentation is an act against artistic freedom and historical truth.

Allowing this incident to set a precedent could lead to a dangerous trend, one where creative freedom is curtailed, and voices are silenced, thus jeopardizing India's democratic principle of freedom of speech. While we respect all points of view, it is crucial that creative products based on historical events get to see the light of day without cuts or unnecessary delays.

We cannot let a vocal minority dictate the narrative while compromising the liberties that form the essence of our diverse and democratic nation. I urge you to join me in this fight to uphold our democratic values and protect artistic freedom in India. Let the truth not be modified, and let the movie "Emergency" release without cuts or further delay. Please, sign this petition to support our cause.
