It's been a long time in the making, but we finally have a council vote scheduled to end the Flock contract on Tuesday, July 21.

We have just one last request to help get this over the line and rid Redmond of this form of mass surveillance!

The Redmond City Council will be voting on Tuesday (July 21) on whether to cancel their contract with Flock for ALPRs, AI-enabled surveillance cameras.  Redmond turned their cameras off last November, after strong community pushback.  Since then, city lawyers have verified that there are no financial penalties from cancelling the contract.  At the May 26 "study session", councilmembers supported cancelling the contract; this will be the formal vote, ratifying the decision.

Redmond canceling the Flock contract will be a major victory – although not the end of the story. The cameras still need to come down, and in some cities Flock has dragged their feet on this.  In other cities, removing Flock has been followed by bringing in other ALPRs from other vendors (which are just as bad) --  so we want to make councilmembers know that we don't want those either. And some cities are considering moratoriums on any new ALPR usage; that might be a good follow on in Redmond as well.
