The Issue

In my personal journey of understanding the complex history of the United States, one figure stands out as particularly egregious: Andrew Jackson. His actions and policies, not least of all the Trail of Tears, make him the epitome of reprehensible. That's why I'm deeply troubled by his continued presence on our $20 bills. Yet, there's an opportunity for change. The change lies in the recognition of Harriet Tubman – abolitionist, suffragette, and leader – on our $20 bills.

Harriet Tubman was a core fixture in the fight for freedom, leading dozens to liberty on what was later named "The Underground Railroad," demonstrating an unparalleled bravery. Tubman's legacy was respected to such an extent that there was an Obama-era proposal in the year 2016 to place her on the new design of the $20 bill. However, a subsequent delay in 2019 saw no immediate actualization of this plan (source: New York Times).

It's time to resurrect this meaningful idea. Tubman's face on the $20 bill would replace a man infamous for his racial prejudice with a woman who devoted her life to the obliteration of that prejudice. It's a symbolic and powerful switch that would demonstrate our nation's shift towards valuing all citizens, irrespective of their race or gender.

Help us remove Andrew Jackson, a notorious embodiment of racial injustice, from the $20 bill and replace him with Harriet Tubman, a pillar of courage and emblem of liberty. Sign this petition and push the U.S. Treasury to finally take action.
