Thank you to everyone who has shared their views on this issue. I want to acknowledge the strong feelings it has raised in our community.

The United States is a nation of immigrants, and I support legal immigration and the contributions immigrants make to our communities. At the same time, I believe it’s important that immigration policy and enforcement not interfere with other law enforcement responsibilities or undermine community trust, which is a concern I understand many residents have raised regarding the 287(g) agreement.

As I understand this agreement, it is intended to operate within existing legal frameworks and in coordination with federal authorities. From my perspective, local governments should strive to cooperate appropriately with the federal government.
