The Issue

Last week in my community in Gauteng, I watched a young graduate sitting at home with no job. It's disheartening, especially when crime continues to rise daily around us. South Africa’s population is surging towards 65 million, yet we only have 155,000 police officers. That translates to just one officer for every 409 people. With such a ratio, how can we ensure the safety of our citizens, especially our women, who often become the most vulnerable?

Our young people are desperate for employment and many of them are eager to serve, willing to don the police uniform to protect their communities. However, the South African Police Service (SAPS) claims there is no budget to hire more officers. Astonishingly, at the same time, R600 million is being allocated for a single day's march in Gauteng. Imagine how many young officers could be employed with that amount. Imagine the resources we could provide—new police vehicles that don't break down, bulletproof vests, and better training facilities.

Hiring more police officers is not just a question of budget management; it's a necessity for the safety and prosperity of our nation. It will help curb rising crime rates, provide jobs for thousands of unemployed South Africans, and build a more reliable security force that can adequately protect a population as large as ours.

I urge you to sign this petition demanding that the South African government reallocates funds to prioritize hiring and equipping more police officers. Let us build a safer South Africa for everyone, starting with providing employment opportunities for those ready to serve. Your signature can lead to transformative change in our communities. Join me in making our voices heard.
