Demand refunds for overcrowded Southwestern Railway services
The Issue
Every day, I board the South Western Railway with the desperate hope to find a seat, only to be disappointed when the promised number of carriages is halved without warning. This has become an all too familiar scene not only for me but also for countless other passengers. It's not just about convenience – it’s about safety, dignity, and respect for all who rely on these services.
The situation is particularly distressing for vulnerable commuters such as the elderly, families with young children, and those with health conditions who are forced to stand in the connector areas of the trains. These spaces are not designed for passenger comfort. They lack air conditioning, especially during the sweltering summer months and have no seating arrangements, exposing passengers to unbearable conditions, sometimes right next to the lavatories. No passenger should have to endure this, especially not for the price they pay.
Currently, South Western Railway does not offer refunds or compensation for this significant inconvenience. Yet, it's a common occurrence for them to reduce the expected number of carriages from 10 to just 5, leaving many without seats. This lack of transparency and communication reflects a disregard for its passengers, who are expected to plan their journeys around an unreliable service.
Statistics from various transport watchdogs show that complaints about train overcrowding have increased by over 40% over the past two years in the UK. With such drastic overcrowding, we're not merely dealing with a discomfort issue but with a safety risk that could be easily mitigated by fair compensation and better planning.
We propose that South Western Railway implement a refund or partial compensation policy for ticket holders who cannot find seating due to the railway's failure to provide the number of carriages they advertise. This move will hold them accountable and incentivise maintaining proper service levels while upholding passenger rights. We also propose that they send alerts ahead of time if they need to reduce carriages, and honour tickets on other services where the trains are too busy to get a seat.
By signing this petition, you're advocating for a fairer, more transparent service that respects passengers and acknowledges the value of their safety and comfort. Hold South Western Railway accountable and demand the respect and service quality passengers deserve. Please sign this petition to call for the introduction of these policies when promised services fall short.
