The Issue

A week ago, three journalists from the Tobinco Media Group were harassed and beaten at the Laboma demolition site on the Teshie-Accra bound beach road. These journalists were at the site to shed light on matters of public interest, a fundamental tenet of their profession. Instead of being allowed to carry out their vital duties, they were met with violence, intimidation, and suppression.

This disturbing incident is a reflection of a larger, alarming trend where journalists, both in Ghana and globally, face threats, harassment, and violence simply for doing their jobs. Journalism is not a crime, and it's crucial that we stand up for those who dedicate their lives to informing the public and upholding democracy as the 4th estate and agents of development.

In our society, where the free press plays a pivotal role in holding power to account and driving change, such threats and attacks cannot be tolerated. According to Reporters Without Borders, press freedom worldwide is increasingly under threat, and Ghana must not contribute to this adverse trend. Instead, Ghana should be a beacon of hope and protection for its press corps.

We urge the government, state authorities, and private security firms to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of journalists. This includes:

1. Implementing and enforcing strict penalties for those found guilty of attacking, harassing, or intimidating journalists.
2. Establishing a dedicated task force to investigate attacks on media personnel and fast-track the justice process.
3. Rolling out awareness campaigns on the importance of press freedom and the role of journalists in our society.
4. Providing comprehensive security training and support for journalists, especially when covering potentially volatile events.

We must create an environment where journalists can work without fear, knowing that their safety is guaranteed and that the government stands not just beside them but firmly behind them. A threat to journalists is a threat to all of us and our collective right to information.

Sign this petition to show your support for a free, fair, and safe environment for journalists in Ghana. By doing so, you're not just standing up for individual reporters but also for democracy and freedom of speech itself. #JournalistsNotTargets
