The Issue

In Boulder, Colorado, many of us parents and guardians are deeply concerned about the lack of accountability in our schools, particularly during the teacher contract negotiation process. Recent experiences have shown that some teachers and school staff may not always act in the best interests of our children. This situation has left parents feeling disenfranchised and frustrated, as decisions that directly impact our children's education and well-being are made without our input.

Our children's formative years should be entrusted to educators and administrators who are not just well-meaning but also held accountable for their actions. Ensuring that parents have a seat at the table during teacher contract negotiations can provide an additional layer of oversight and ensure that the voices of those most invested in students’ futures - the families - are heard.

Our proposal is straightforward: Work with local third-party community organizations to identify diverse (minoritized & marginalized) parents/guardians representatives to include in teacher contract negotiation process. These representatives would be selected by the parent community and would serve as a liaison between families and school administrators representing student and family interests in the teacher contract term negations. They would also have a weighted impact on contract terms. This change would ensure transparency, foster trust, and ultimately improve the educational environment for our children and work towards creating a more equitable relationship between families, the school district, and its staff.

It's crucial to have accountability at every level of our education system, and involving us - the families - directly in negotiations is a vital step. Such involvement has proven effective in other districts, leading to better outcomes for students without disrupting the negotiation process.

We urge the Boulder School District to adopt this proposal and work with parents to develop a fair and transparent process by working with third party community organizations to select parent representatives. By doing so, they will demonstrate a commitment to a collaborative approach that values the insights and concerns of all stakeholders.

Join us in demanding that the Boulder education system take this important step towards inclusion and accountability. Sign this petition to support parent representation in teacher contract negotiations, ensuring a better future for our children.
