NSW DET mamipulates data in breech of the WHS Act to avoid responsibility for Decklan's Death

Decklan Hayward, 7, was dropped off at Glenroi Heights Public School in Orange on Wednesday, July 19 2023. However, hours later Decklan’s mother got a call from the school advising her that he had been involved in a “choking incident”. His mother was told Decklan had been laughing and playing with his friends during a nutritional program when he began to choke on the frankfurt.
Staff and paramedics tried to save his life, however, his brain was deprived of oxygen for nearly 20 minutes and he went into cardiac arrest. He was flown to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney with extensive brain damage and was placed on life support.
However, Decklan’s family made the difficult decision to turn off his life support.

The NSW Department of Education has now claimed (in writing) that “there has never been a fatality in a NSW School from choking” to avoid any responsibility for additional measures to protect school students when first aid fails. They did this by manipulating the data review period to an unconventional financial year rather than a school year to deliberately exclude Decklan's death, in breach of the WHS Act. This is in addition to making a series of false and misleading statements to the Education Minister, Prue Car MP, fabricating legislation and evidence that does not exist to avoid doing anything, after the Minister has repeatedly refused to meet with Decklan’s parents or anyone about this issue.  There is a serious issue in NSW, and it appears the DET and the Minister lack the integrity and intelligence to manage this issue appropriately.
