I am a student at Nelson Mandela University, and I have experienced firsthand the trauma and distress of being sexually assaulted by a fellow student here. Despite the fact that my assailant was found guilty, the university failed to deliver any meaningful punishment. This lack of action not only overlooks justice for survivors but also creates an unsafe environment for the campus community.

Sexual Assault and Rape are heinous crimes that can have devastating and long-lasting impacts on students' lives. As an institution meant to prioritize student welfare and safety, Nelson Mandela University must demonstrate its commitment to protecting its students by holding perpetrators fully accountable for their actions.

Currently, the sanctions imposed by the university are insufficient, often amounting to nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Perpetrators are often hidden and protected, which only serves to perpetuate an unsafe atmosphere. This needs to change immediately. Statistics show that universities that take firm action in addressing sexual misconduct see significant reductions in incidents. A proactive stance by Nelson Mandela University will not only deter potential offenders but also lend support and credibility to the voices of survivors.

The university needs to take immediate and concrete actions, such as:

Establishing a transparent procedure that fully addresses and takes seriously all allegations of sexual misconduct.
Implementing mandatory, comprehensive education on consent and respect for all students and staff.
Ensuring that guilty offenders face appropriate, severe consequences that reflect the seriousness of their actions and deter future offenses.
Creating a safe and supportive environment for survivors to report incidents without fear of retaliation or invalidation.
