The Issue

I am writing this petition out of deep frustration and disappointment with the living conditions at Sewu Housing Projects. As a student, a vital part of my success hinges on my living environment being conducive to learning, safety, and proper hygiene. Unfortunately, Sewu falls drastically short of these basic expectations. I urge everyone to stand with us in demanding an immediate overhaul of this housing facility.

Firstly, the maintenance service at Sewu is appalling. The entire residence is only cleaned once a month by an elderly man, which is hardly adequate given the number of students residing here. This neglect not only raises concerns about our health and well-being but also illustrates a lack of respect for the students who are paying to live under these conditions.

Secondly, the curfew at 10 PM is overly restrictive and doesn't take into account emergency situations. Students should not feel imprisoned and deprived of autonomy, especially when they have legitimate reasons for being out late, such as academic events or part-time work. This current curfew policy is archaic and fails to reflect the realities of student life.

Moreover, the facilities provided at Sewu are grossly inadequate. With only two washing machines available for over 80 students, laundry becomes a time-consuming struggle rather than a manageable task. The absence of a study room further exacerbates our academic challenges as we lack a dedicated, quiet environment conducive to effective study. Furthermore, the inability to access hot water for bathing is not only uncomfortable but also unacceptable, as it affects our overall health and quality of life.

These issues collectively paint a picture of a residence that is ill-equipped for students who rely on National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funds. Our money is meant to support our education and living conditions that facilitate academic success, not to be wasted on subpar facilities and conditions that hinder our student experience.

We demand that Sewu Housing Projects take immediate action to address these concerns. Specifically, we ask for:
- A complete reevaluation of the cleaning schedule, increasing frequency and ensuring all areas are adequately maintained.
- Revision of the curfew policy to better accommodate student life and emergencies.
- Expansion of laundry facilities to meet the needs of all residents.
- Investment in a study room equipped for student use.
- Installation of a hot water system for the well-being of all residents.

We believe these changes are not only necessary but are also within reach. They reflect a basic standard of living that every student deserves. Please sign this petition to support our call for justice and reform at Sewu Housing Projects. Let’s ensure our NSFAS money supports our education, not hinders it!
