Demand justice for Dr Robert Waiye's tragic death

The issue

Dr Robert Waiye was a beacon of hope and service to his community. At just 26 years old, he had achieved his dream of becoming a doctor and returned to his roots in Simbu Province to provide medical care at Kundiawa General Hospital. He was not just a healthcare professional; he was a loving husband and father to two young sons. On the night of 15 September 2026, after completing his shift, Dr Waiye was tragically assaulted in Kundiawa. Despite the efforts of his colleagues to save him, the injuries he sustained proved too severe, and he passed away on 17 September.

This senseless act of violence has left a void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and the entire community he served so diligently. Dr Waiye's commitment to his people meant he worked tirelessly to improve health outcomes in a region that deeply needed his expertise and compassion. His death is not only a personal tragedy but a significant loss to public health in the area.

There are pressing questions that remain unanswered about the circumstances leading to Dr Waiye's assault and the adequacy of his medical care post-injury. To honor his memory and ensure no other family endures such a loss, we call for:

1. A thorough and transparent investigation into the assault that led to Dr Waiye's death, identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

2. An independent review of the medical care he received at Kundiawa General Hospital to ensure all protocols were followed and identify any gaps in healthcare delivery.

3. Support for Dr Waiye's family, who now face an uncertain future without their beloved son, husband, and father.

4. Measures to ensure the safety and protection of healthcare workers in Simbu Province, helping to prevent further acts of violence and ensuring that those who serve the community can do so safely.

We urge the Papua New Guinea government, local authorities, and relevant health organizations to take immediate action. Dr Waiye's dedication to his community should be honored with justice, and his family should be given the peace they deserve. Please join us in demanding accountability and safety by signing this petition.
