Tricky the cow (formerly known as Trick or Treater) was actually born at the former Twist of Fate "sanctuary". Since legitimate sanctuaries do not breed their animals, it's somewhat of a rare occurrence for one of the animals to give birth.
Ashley DiFelice had purchased the property that was to become Twist of Fate from someone who was previously using it as a dairy farm. The farmer sold off most of the cows months prior, but Ashley went over to ask him about the ones that he had left. He didn't want to surrender any because he wanted to show them off at the fair, but he agreed to give them one and she then became a permanent resident of TOF for Ashley and her son Deacon to care for. Deacon named her Mooey.
Mooey turned out to be pregnant and while she waited for the birth of the only baby that she had that she would get to keep and love on, she got to know the other animals at TOF and became good friends with a cow named Heartbreaker*. Mooey gave birth on October 8th, 2019, and Deacon named the baby girl Trick or Treater, after his favorite holiday.
Mooey was older and had been used all her life for breeding, and sadly she passed away sometime before 2022, though her baby girl Trick or Treater also grew up to be close to her mama's good friend Heartbreaker.
The only photos that I have of Trick or Treater at Twist of Fate are her baby photos, and one of those is the image above. The October 19, 2019 post has the words "I am so happy she gets to grow up only knowing happiness and kindness" in the caption. The cruel irony is that only a few years later, every single animal on that property would either be dead or need to be saved....again.
After Ashley DiFelice's cruelty and neglect was discovered, the animals were all removed from the property of the former "sanctuary" and placed into new homes. Trick or Treater and Heartbreaker were the very last two animals to be placed. Both were taken in by Gratitude Gate (@gratitude_gate) in South Carolina, USA. Many of the sanctuaries that took in the surviving animals gave them new names to go along with their new start in life, these two included. Trick or Treater was renamed Tricky and Heartbreaker was renamed Herbie.
They are still so much a bonded pair and are thriving in their new home, and they made friends with Gratitude's other cows PeeBee and Babe (who sadly passed away in June). Tricky grew up to really resemble her mother with the same coloring and face markings. Both are Jersey cows, one of the most common breeds exploited by the dairy industry. To learn more about how the dairy industry uses and abuses cows, you can watch 'Milked' on Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, or AppleTV. As of the publication of this article, you can watch the entire movie for free on Vimeo. You can also watch this 5 minute video on YouTube.
To see Tricky now (she's all grown up!) and to watch her along with her friend Herbie, please give @gratitude_gate a follow! They also have horses, donkeys, goats, ducks, pigs, cats, geese, dogs, swans, turkeys, peacocks, and a llama with the most beautiful spots, plus they post gorgeous photos of the animals too. If you'd like to make a donation to support the care of Tricky or anyone else, you can do so via their website, PayPal (gratitudegate@gmail.com), or their Amazon Wishlist . To make a monthly donation in any amount, you can also join their Patreon!
We're so happy that Tricky finally found a home where she is cared for, loved, and lacks for nothing.
Thank you so much for being here!
*Heartbreaker/Herbie will have his story shared soon too!
Ashley's next court date is Thursday, November 2nd. According to the last court date on October 12th, additional charges are supposed to be filed against her at this time.
