The Issue
Destin Pickett, a cherished member of the Baton Rouge community, was tragically taken from us. He was a beloved individual who always put others before himself. Destin was a Liberty High School graduate and attended Southeastern University. He was a hard-working and dedicated member of our community, known for his kind heart and willingness to lend a helping hand. He was currently working at Curbside on Government Street. He always donated plasma at biolife to save others. His life was abruptly ended at the hands of Charlotte Jones, a person who showed flagrant disregard for the law.
On that fateful day, Destin was on bus Cats 44, a routine he followed diligently to make a positive impact in the lives of those around him. getting of the bus at 3:30 pm August 12. Charlotte Jones, intoxicated and speeding, collided with him on the road dragging him 0.9 miles then fleeing the scene. What intensifies this unbearable tragedy is that Jones had been driving for 30 years without ever holding a valid driver's license. Her reckless behavior has robbed us of a valuable life, leaving a gap that no one can fill.
In light of these facts, we demand that Charlotte Jones face the full extent of the law. The community of Baton Rouge has been shaken by this preventable loss, and justice must be served to ensure that Destin’s memory is honored. Legal accountability must be enforced to send a strong message that such negligence will not be tolerated.
We cannot bring Destin back, but we can strive towards ensuring such tragedies do not claim another innocent life. This is not just a call for justice for Destin, but a call to enforce the laws meant to protect each and every one of us.
