We write to you with deep concern regarding the continued detention of African American journalist Bilal Abdul Kareem.

As of today, @BilalKareem has been detained for 191 days without being formally charged or brought to trial. Equally troubling, his family last saw him during a short prison visit 34 days ago.

The lack of transparency surrounding his detention raises urgent humanitarian and legal concerns. Members of the international community are left asking: Is Bilal Abdul Kareem being tortured? If he is not, we respectfully urge your government to provide proof that he is safe by allowing him to communicate with his family and grant him access to legal counsel. Transparency is the best way to dispel these grave concerns.

We also respectfully ask: Why has Bilal Abdul Kareem still not been granted access to a lawyer? Access to legal counsel and the opportunity to challenge one's detention are fundamental principles of due process and justice.

Another troubling development is that Bilal Abdul Kareem's OGNtv YouTube channel has been shut down during his detention. Because Mr. Bilal Abdul Kareem has been in government custody for more than six months and reportedly does not have access to his personal devices, this has raised serious questions among members of the public about how this occurred. We respectfully ask your government to clarify whether it has any knowledge of, or involvement in, the loss of access to his channel.

If there is credible evidence against Mr. Bilal Abdul Kareem, he should be promptly informed of the charges against him and afforded a fair, transparent, and timely legal process. If there is insufficient evidence to justify his continued detention, he should be released without delay.

We respectfully call upon your government to:

• Confirm that Bilal Abdul Kareem is safe and permit communication with his family.

• Grant him immediate access to legal counsel.

• Ensure he receives a fair, transparent, and timely legal process.

• Clarify the circumstances surrounding the shutdown of his OGNtv YouTube channel.

• Uphold Syria's obligations under international human rights standards concerning due process and humane treatment.

Justice is strengthened through transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. We hope your government will take immediate steps to address these concerns.
