The Issue

Growing up in a country rich with history and resilience, I believed that South Africa was a place where every voice mattered and where justice prevailed. But reality paints a different picture — a harrowing image of fear, violence, and neglect. As a woman, a mother, a sister, and a proud South African citizen, I am heartbroken and outraged at the peril our women endure daily.

Women across South Africa are being raped, assaulted, and murdered with little to no recourse or justice. We hear statistics about gender-based violence: according to the South African Police Service, over 42,000 cases of rape were reported between April 2019 and March 2020. Yet, these numbers barely scratch the surface, as many incidents remain shrouded in silence out of fear and stigma.

Our government, which was meant to protect and empower us, is failing. Promises have been made, but action has been nominal. Our streets are not safe, our cries for help are unanswered, and our perpetrators walk free, shattering lives without consequence. Where is the justice for our sisters who have fallen? Where is the support for those of us who still live in fear?

It is crystal clear that something needs to change. We can no longer cast votes for a system that ignores our plight and sidesteps accountability. No political party, no union deserves our support until they genuinely commit to ending this violence and bringing about substantial reform in the justice system.

I call for immediate action:

1. Prioritise and expedite the processing of gender-based violence cases in courts.
2. Allocate more resources for victim support and recovery programs.
3. Implement stringent monitoring and evaluation of police conduct, ensuring that all reports of violence against women are taken seriously and handled with urgency.

My story is personal, yet it is the story of many. Our sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends have waited long enough. We must raise our collective voices and demand change. Stand with us in solidarity and sign this petition. Help us ensure that the future of South African women is one of safety, dignity, and justice. We refuse to be silent any longer. Enough is enough; your signature can make a difference.
